initial research into music videos

Losing My Religion - R.E.M

The use of low-key lighting and the colour scheme of browns and whites instantly sets the tone for the music video. However, this heavily contrasts when it cuts to anything else which isn't the main singer, using brighter colours, using high-key lighting and having extravagant costumes. This fits the nature of the song as the video gets darker (visually) to match the lyrics. The video is quite representative of different cultures and religions so it can be interpreted differently by separate groups of people, as well as being quite symbolic.

Here It Goes Again - Ok Go

The whole music video was recorded continuous which shows the unbroken movement of the choreography and without any editing, it makes the audience focus on what is happening. What makes this music video stand out is the use mise-en-scene as the props of treadmills is uncommon in music videos and as it goes against the codes and convention of music videos, it is very memorable. This amplifies the effect of the song because they are performing, dancing and singing to the rhythm of the music.

Clint Eastwood - Gorillaz

This song uses animation throughout its entirety, which goes against codes and conventions of music videos. Gorillaz are commonly known for the use of their animated characters playing as the band and they are seen in many different of their music videos. This idea influences the audience to easily recognise the characters and style of animation of associate it with certain songs and the band itself. This music video mainly uses storytelling to make the audience interested.

OK - Wallows

The music video is a performance video which uses comedy as a way to amplify the upbeat tempo to complement the overall mood of the song.  As well as this there is also use of stop motion animation to further this effect. The video cuts from different scenes and uses different overlays, angles and movements of the camerawork, as well as different lens, for example: a fish eye lens, to create contrasting effects to make it more interesting for the audience.

I Want It That Way - Backstreet Boys

The video shows the band singing in at different locations and having the mise-en-scene change as they use distinct costumes for each. There is a high saturation making the colours (mainly being: the blues, whites and greens) really pop to make it look aesthetic and visually appealing. The use of a blurry fade transition also amplifies this technique.
