initial proposal
Name of Artist: azaleah
Song choice: "Feels Like We Only Go Backwards" - Tame Impala
Overall concept of music video: The music video cuts between the artist singing with a colourful projection for the background and 'another version' of the artist who is collecting flowers to give to someone and eventually gives them to them just to be rejected (whole plot line in reverse). Then the story aligns at the end revealing that the 'other' is getting rejected by the artist themselves.
About the video and why it will work well for this song: The main part of my music video will be a small storyline which is all in reverse, which fits well with the song as it takes the literal meaning of the title of "feels like we only backwards".
What type of genre conventions would we expect to see? What existing music videos or media texts will you be taking your inspiration from? I am taking inspiration from the music video "Breezeblocks" by Alt-j. The video is reversed which is an interesting concept as it makes the viewer unsure what is happening as there is little context but simultaneously intrigued.
How will your music video fulfil the requirements of the NEA brief? It will meet the brief as it will have two different settings as it cuts to and from separate locations and there will be two different characters and social groups being represented.
Who is the audience for your music video? What sort of attitudes, values and beliefs might they have and how will your video reflect these? The audience for the artist will be different as they will have just gained a large new following by signing with a big label, as well as having older fans which have supported the artist for years.
What equipment, personnel and locations are you going to need to create this?
- Equipment: projector, soft box lighting, camera, tri-pod, bunch of flowers (prop)
- Personnel: someone to help film, me
- Locations: artists' "studio", inside the house, front door / front door (outside), driveway, alleyway, woods.
What sort of organisational tasks will you do to make sure you can achieve this? I have produced a 30 second swede which ensures I am able to edit reversed videos and the lip sync practise also shows I am able to use a projector.
What issues or challenges do you predict facing when making this video? I predict there may be issues due to weather as I am filming during Winter, I may not be able to film on days I would like to as it is raining, too windy, etc. Not only this, but I may also face a challenge as I will be filming on separate days which may cause continuity errors.
How will your website link to these ideas? What extra content may you have on your website? How will the artist be promoted and/or represented? The website will link to my ideas as it will include the contrasting aesthetics of who the artist was and who they want to become. Extra content will include: 1 minute of a music video, album cover, links to artists' social medias, merch store?, personal message from artist. the artist is represented as having gained a popular following by being signed by the big signed label.
